The Federal Pell Grant is the largest source of federally funded grant aid for undergraduate students in the United States. Unlike a student loan, a Pell Grant does not need to be repaid. It is awarded based on financial need, cost of attendance, and enrollment status.

Who qualifies for a Pell Grant?

Eligibility is determined entirely by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To qualify you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or completed homeschool program
  • Be enrolled or accepted as a regular student in an eligible degree or certificate program
  • Demonstrate financial need based on your Student Aid Index (SAI) — the figure that replaced the older Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
  • Not have already earned a bachelor's degree
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress

There is no fixed income cutoff. The Department of Education uses a formula that considers family income, household size, and number of dependents in college. Most awards go to students from households earning under $60,000 per year, though students from higher-income families may qualify in some circumstances.

How much is the Pell Grant in 2026?

The maximum Pell Grant award for the 2026–27 academic year is up to $7,580 [verify the current figure on studentaid.gov before publishing]. Awards are pro-rated based on enrollment status — full-time students receive the full annual maximum, half-time students typically receive about half.

The minimum award is approximately $750 [verify]. You can receive Pell Grant funding for up to 12 semesters (or about 6 academic years) total across your undergraduate career.

How to apply

  1. Gather your documents: Social Security number, federal income tax returns, records of untaxed income, and bank/investment statements.
  2. Complete the FAFSA at studentaid.gov. The form opens October 1 each year for the following academic year.
  3. List your schools so each can prepare a financial aid offer.
  4. Review your Student Aid Report (SAR) within a few weeks. This shows your SAI and which schools received your information.
  5. Accept your award through your school's financial aid portal once they send your offer.

There is no application fee — anyone asking you to pay to file the FAFSA is misrepresenting the process.

When you'll receive funds

Pell Grant funds are sent directly to your school, not to you. Your school applies the funds to tuition and required fees first, then any remaining balance is refunded to you for living expenses, books, and supplies. Disbursements typically happen at the start of each term.

Common questions

Can I receive Pell Grant funds and other aid at the same time? Yes. Pell Grants can be combined with FSEOG, state grants, institutional aid, and federal student loans. Receiving a Pell Grant often qualifies you for additional need-based aid.

What happens if I drop classes? If you withdraw from courses partway through a term, you may be required to return a portion of your Pell Grant funds. Check with your school's financial aid office before reducing your enrollment.

Do I need to reapply each year? Yes. The FAFSA must be submitted each academic year because eligibility is based on current financial circumstances.
